When the place was conquered by the Romans, it was turned into a Roman town with shops, warehouses and homes. Its main industry then was salt fish production.

There is no lack of interesting ancient buildings around Alicante; the ancient fortress of Castillo Fortaleza of Santa Pola was built during the 16th century with impressive watch towers.

The beautiful medieval town of Peñiscola offers Oropesa, a majestic medieval castle that conserves the ancient 16th century tower called ‘the Tower of the King’. This tower was built to defend the town against pirates.
