In Spain, hotels are easily classified with stars. These are from one to five stars. The stars are an indication of quality but also a way of knowing about all the facilities that are rendered in the said hotel. An example is comparing a three star hotel to a four star hotel. Letter R stands for residencia and comes after H to tell you that the hotel has no meal service but may serve breakfast. When you spot F (fonda), P (pension), CH (casa de huespedes) and HS (hostal), you can be sure that the accommodation you are entering is highly budget. In the smaller areas like villages, the budget accommodation is clean but basic. In the cities, it may be very dreary.

Enquiring about the facilities in a hotel is a good idea. If you need a private bath, ask whether the facility is habitacion con bano. Single rooms are usually available and may be a little small. Many travelers may choose a double room even if they are alone. A double bed is always a good idea. You should make your own specifications, especially on the size of the bed.

In rural Spain, it is still quite easy to get the very best accommodation. A trend has developed towards agrotourismos and small hotels in the countryside.
